5th Grade Math
Welcome to fifth grade math! Throughout the school year, students will concentrate their studies on applying the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of the following major skills and concepts:
- the relationship between decimals, fractions, and whole numbers;
- geometric concepts such as volume of quadrilaterals and classifying polygons;
- algebraic concepts including patterns, relationships, and numerical expressions;
- analyzing, illustrating, and interpreting data; and,
- graphing ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.
Throughout our units of study, students will solve problems that require them to identify and apply one or more of the concepts that we explore. Most students find success to come more easily if multiplication facts have been memorized.
Course Objectives
- Provide each student with a solid mathematical foundation (computation and application).
- Strengthen each student's problem solving skills.
- Raise each student’s level of confidence in his/her ability to learn mathematics.
- Help each student master important “everyday” math that will be useful to him/her for a lifetime.
